ABOUT THE CITY
Nestled in the northeastern region of Kentucky, Grayson is a home rule-class city that serves as the county seat of Carter County. Positioned conveniently on US Route 60 and Interstate 64, and just 21 miles west of Ashland, Grayson proves to be both accessible and idyllic. With a population of 4,217 as of the 2010 census, this progressive city offers a small-town feel coupled with an array of recreational opportunities.
THE HISTORY
Salt makers were among the first to settle in this area in the early 1800s. Originally, the community was recognized as the Crossroads, but in 1838, it underwent a name change to Grayson as it was designated the seat of the newly formed Carter County. The city took its new name from Colonel William Grayson’s family, who were significant landowners in the region.
